Terms
Last updated: October 23, 2026
Two parts: the license agreement you accept when you install HonkBoard, and the terms for using honkboard.app and share links, which apply whether or not you use HonkBoard.
Part 1: HonkBoard End User License Agreement
This End User License Agreement (“Agreement”) is between you and HonkBoard LLC, a Tennessee limited liability company (“we”, “us”). It covers the HonkBoard software, its updates, and its documentation (“HonkBoard”). By installing or using HonkBoard you agree to this Agreement. If you don’t agree, don’t install or use it.
1. License
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use HonkBoard on computers you own or control, for as long as your license is valid. One license may be activated on up to 2 computers at a time; deactivate it on one (Settings → License) to move it to another. A free trial license works on 1 computer and ends on the date shown in HonkBoard. HonkBoard is licensed, not sold; we keep all rights not expressly granted to you. You must be at least 13 years old to use HonkBoard. If you’re under 18, or under the age at which you can agree to this yourself where you live (16 in parts of the EU), a parent or guardian must agree to this Agreement for you.
2. What you may not do
You may not:
- sell, rent, lend, sublicense or redistribute HonkBoard or license keys;
- remove or get around license checks or other technical limits in HonkBoard;
- remove copyright, trademark or other notices;
- publish or share your license key; a key shared publicly may be disabled; or
- use HonkBoard to break the law or anyone else’s rights, or to harass, spam or deceive people.
Nothing in this Agreement limits rights you have under law that can’t be waived, including any right to reverse engineer for interoperability.
3. Content you add
HonkBoard is a tool. Apart from the free sound effects it includes (by Kenney, released to the public domain under CC0, free to use for any purpose), it doesn’t come with, sell or provide third-party content. Everything you add to it is your responsibility, including:
- sounds and audio, including anything you download, record or import;
- images, GIFs and screensavers;
- Stream Deck plugins and icon packs;
- profiles and layouts you import, and .honkpack and .honklayout files you share.
You confirm that you have the rights or permission to use and share everything you add or share, and that you follow the license terms set by the people who made it, including any marketplace or store you got it from. HonkBoard’s import tools copy only your own settings and layout. They never copy other apps’ plugins, icon packs or artwork for you.
Don’t use HonkBoard to infringe anyone’s copyright, trademark, privacy or other rights. Recording laws differ by place, and some require everyone’s consent before a conversation is recorded. When you record or use instant replay, you’re responsible for getting consent where the law requires it. We may respond to valid complaints from rights holders. Send complaints to [email protected].
Share links. A share link lets anyone who has it press the sounds on it, from anywhere, within the limits you set. You choose who gets your links, and anyone who has one can pass it on, so give them only to people you trust; you can pause, end or delete a link, or replace it with a new one, at any time, and see who has it open, take someone off it or block them. If you allow it, the people with a link can also see what’s playing, what’s up next and its waveform. Share links need an active license or trial, and they’re for fair, personal use: each installation gets a daily allowance of relay messages (shown in Settings → Share links) and presses at least a few seconds apart, and past the allowance its links pause until the next day. We may change these limits to keep the service running. You’re responsible for what plays through HonkBoard when people press your links, including in voice chats, streams, games and meetings, for following those services’ rules, and for getting any consent the law requires from the people who hear it. Don’t use share links, or let them be used, to harass, spam, disrupt or deceive anyone, or to play content you don’t have the right to play.
4. Third-party software and services
HonkBoard includes open-source components under their own licenses, listed in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt (also under Settings → About → Open-source licenses). Those components are licensed to you under their own licenses, and nothing in this Agreement limits your rights under them. For components under the GNU Lesser General Public License, such as FFmpeg and libuiohook, that includes the right to modify them, replace them with your own versions, and reverse engineer HonkBoard to debug those changes. It can work with other products and services, including Stream Deck hardware, OBS, Voicemeeter, Discord, SteamVR, VRChat, plugins and websites. Those are provided by others under their own terms. We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for them. The installer can also install VB-CABLE as an optional step: it is VB-Audio Software’s donationware (www.vb-cable.com), included unchanged with its author’s permission and provided under VB-Audio’s own license, not as part of HonkBoard. Share links travel through HonkBoard’s relay (relay.honkboard.app), which we run on Cloudflare: it passes sealed messages between your HonkBoard and the pages and keeps none of them. Like any online service it may be slow or unavailable at times, so presses may arrive late or not at all. The share link page at honkboard.app/s is provided as is, like HonkBoard. HonkBoard is not affiliated with or endorsed by Elgato, Corsair, Soundpad, OBS, Discord, VB-Audio, NVIDIA, Logitech, Microsoft, Valve, VRChat or any other company whose products it works with. Their names and trademarks belong to them and are used only to describe compatibility. Windows text-to-speech voices are provided by Windows under your Windows license. Natural voices are an optional download of the Kokoro voice model and its pronunciation dictionaries, released by their makers under the Apache License 2.0; they are synthetic voices, not copies of real people. Don’t use text to speech or the voice changer to impersonate a real person or to mislead people.
5. Privacy
HonkBoard has no analytics or tracking. Your sound library, settings, layouts and text-to-speech text stay on your computer. HonkBoard reads the tags and album art inside your sound files and watches your download folder for new sound files, all on your computer; it only changes your files when you ask it to (renaming a file, or moving it to the Recycle Bin when you remove a sound and choose to). (Natural voices use Microsoft’s DirectML on the graphics card, which may send diagnostic data to Microsoft under Microsoft’s terms.) HonkBoard only connects to the internet for things you do: websites you open in its browser (and the search engine you pick), files you choose to download, the natural voices if you download them (from Hugging Face and GitHub), the ad blocker’s filter lists if you turn it on, Discord if you connect it with your own Discord app, and Home Assistant and Philips Hue if you connect them (HonkBoard talks to them on your local network and keeps your Home Assistant token and Hue key encrypted on your computer; “Find my bridge” asks Philips’ discovery service, discovery.meethue.com, which Hue bridges are on your network), the weather from Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) for the place a Weather key or dial shows while one is on your Stream Deck, and its place search when you type a place, the website a System Vitals ping key names, to time it, and Elgato lights on your local network while a lights key or dial is on your Stream Deck (HonkBoard asks the network which Elgato lights are there, and talks to each light directly). Three features let other devices control HonkBoard and are off until you turn them on: the phone and tablet remote serves a page on your local network to anyone who has its secret link; share links let anyone who has one of your links press its sounds from anywhere, within the limits you set, through HonkBoard’s relay (run on Cloudflare), which passes on messages encrypted with a key only the link holds and keeps none of them (it sees your IP address while you’re connected, as any website does, but doesn’t record it, and the people with your links never see it, nor you theirs; if you block someone, it keeps a scrambled form of their IP address, not the address, for up to 30 days to keep that network off that link; to host links, HonkBoard shows it your signed license, as it does the update server, and it keeps only a scrambled ID of this installation with how many messages its links sent that day), while the people with the link see its name, its sounds’ names, lengths and key pictures and, if you allow it, what’s playing and its waveform; and OSC accepts commands from apps on this computer (or on your local network, if you allow it). The VR panels (on your wrist, in the air, the HonkBoard panel and HonkPlayer’s), if you turn them on, talk only to SteamVR on this computer; HonkBoard reads SteamVR’s settings but never changes them, and notes which game SteamVR is showing so your Stream Deck can switch to its layout, as it does with the app in front on your desktop. If you turn on the VRChat chatbox, HonkBoard sends what you play (the text you set, such as the title, artist and album) to VRChat on this computer, which shows it to the people near you. MIDI controllers are read only on your computer. Stream Deck plugins you install are made by others and may connect to the internet on their own. To check your license, HonkBoard sends your license key, your computer’s name, the activation ID for this computer and a one-way code made from your computer’s Windows ID (so a free trial can be used once per computer) to our license server, which checks the key with Lemon Squeezy, our payment and license provider, when you activate or deactivate it, at startup if the last check is more than a day old, and about once a day while it runs. To check for updates, it downloads a small version file from updates.honkboard.app at startup and every few hours, sending its signed license so only licensed copies get updates, and downloads the new version when there is one. When you start a free trial, HonkBoard also records on your computer (in the Windows registry and a small file) that this computer has used its trial. These requests, like any internet request, include your IP address. HonkBoard sends no crash reports. It keeps a log of errors and crashes on your computer, and of sounds that stop before their end and what stopped them, by an internal number rather than their name (you can turn it off in Settings → About; your Windows user name is left out of it), and it reaches us only if you choose to send it, for example attached to an email to support. The full privacy policy is at honkboard.app/privacy.
6. Updates and changes
We may provide updates. Some features may need the latest version. Features may change or be retired over time. We may change this Agreement for future versions; the version that came with your copy applies to that copy.
7. Termination
This license ends automatically if you break this Agreement. When it ends, you must stop using HonkBoard and delete it. Sections 3, 8, 9 and 10 continue after it ends.
8. No warranty
HONKBOARD IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. THIS INCLUDES WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS. WE DON’T PROMISE THAT HONKBOARD WILL BE ERROR-FREE, OR THAT IT WILL WORK WITH ANY PARTICULAR DEVICE, PLUGIN, GAME OR SERVICE.
9. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE AREN’T LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST DATA, PROFITS OR GOODWILL. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR HONKBOARD IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM.
Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not apply to you. Nothing in this Agreement limits rights you have as a consumer under laws that can’t be waived.
10. Indemnity
You agree to cover our reasonable costs if a third party makes a claim against us because of content you added to or shared from HonkBoard, or because you broke this Agreement.
11. General
This Agreement is governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute about it or about HonkBoard will be decided by the state or federal courts located in Knox County, Tennessee, and you and we agree to their jurisdiction. If you’re a consumer in the EU or UK, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country you live in, and can bring claims in its courts. If any part of it can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. This is the entire agreement between us about HonkBoard.

Part 2: Using honkboard.app and share links
These terms are for everyone who visits honkboard.app or opens a share link (honkboard.app/s), whether or not you use HonkBoard. HonkBoard LLC runs the site and the relay that share links travel through. If you install HonkBoard, the agreement above applies to you as well.
- What a share link is. Someone with HonkBoard chose some of their sounds and sent you a link to press them. The sounds play on their computer. They decide what’s on the link and for how long, and they can pause or end it, take you off it or block you at any time.
- Play fair. Don’t use a share link to harass, spam, disrupt or deceive anyone. Don’t try to get past its limits or someone’s block, and don’t attack, overload or try to get around how the site or the relay work. We may keep networks that do off the relay.
- The sounds aren’t ours. The sounds on a link, their names and their pictures come from the person who shared them, not from us. If something shared through a link infringes your rights, tell us at [email protected].
- Age. You must be at least 13 to use a share link. If you’re under 18, or under the age at which you can agree to these terms yourself where you live (16 in parts of the EU), you need a parent’s or guardian’s OK.
- No promises. The site, the share page and the relay are provided as is. They may be slow or unavailable at times, and may change or stop. To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for any loss from using them. Nothing here limits rights you have under law that can’t be waived.
- Privacy. What the share page keeps and sends is in the privacy policy, under “People who open a share link”.
- Law. These terms follow Tennessee law, with disputes decided by the courts in Knox County, Tennessee, as in section 11 of the agreement above. Consumers in the EU and UK keep the protection of their own country’s mandatory laws.
- Changes. We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed.
